Deep tissue massage works with the connective tissues in the body to
reduce pain and increase flexibility in injured or strained muscles.
All muscles and organs in the body are encased in a sheath of connective
tissues called fascia. When the fascia is healthy, muscles glide over
each other in a fluid and easy motion. However, when a muscle is damaged,
by injury or repetitive use, the tissues become shorter and denser as
they heal and restrict range of motion. Also, as the tissues shorten,
they can pull the underlying structures, such as bones, out of alignment
and cause chronic pain. Deep tissue massage works on superficial and
deep fascia to break up fascial adhesions and restore range of motion.
